How We Test for Radon in Your Home

Certified. Accurate. Compliant.

At Guardian Airworks, we provide professional radon testing services across Northeast Ohio using blind Continuous Radon Monitors (CRMs), fully compliant with National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) guidelines and the Ohio Department of Health regulations.

Our goal is simple: give you accurate, trustworthy results so you can protect your home and your family.

What Is a Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM)?

A Continuous Radon Monitor is an advanced electronic device that measures radon gas levels in real-time over a 48-hour period (or longer, as needed). It provides hourly readings, offering a detailed profile of how radon levels fluctuate in your home throughout the day and night.

We use “blind” CRMs, which means homeowners cannot view the test results during the measurement period. This helps ensure the test is not influenced or tampered with—maintaining full chain of custody and data integrity in accordance with NRPP protocol.

Our Testing Process: Step-by-Step

1. Initial Consultation

We discuss your concerns, gather basic property information, and schedule a time for testing—typically during normal closed-house conditions.

2. Pre-Test Site Inspection

Before setting up equipment, we:

  • Conduct a walk-through of the lowest livable level of your home
  • Document HVAC systems, foundation type, and any relevant environmental factors
  • Review testing conditions with the homeowner (closed-house, 12 hours prior)

3. CRM Device Setup

We place a calibrated, NRPP-approved blind CRM:

  • On the lowest livable level of the home
  • At least 3 feet from doors and windows, 20 inches from the floor
  • Away from drafts, high humidity, and heat sources

A tamper detector is enabled to ensure test integrity, and the start time is documented.

4. 48-Hour Monitoring Period

Over the next 48 hours, the CRM records hourly radon levels. During this time:

  • Closed-house conditions must be maintained
  • Our CRM tracks temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure to ensure proper test environment

5. Device Retrieval & Data Analysis

After 48 hours:

  • We return to retrieve the device
  • The data is downloaded and evaluated by a certified measurement professional
  • We review the results and interpret them in accordance with EPA and Ohio guidelines

6. Clear, Easy-to-Understand Report

You receive a detailed digital report within 24 hours, including:

  • Average radon level (measured in pCi/L)
  • Hourly radon graph
  • EPA action recommendations
  • Certification and QA/QC documentation

If levels are at or above 4.0 pCi/L, we will explain your options for mitigation and next steps.
